Is spray foam the right insulation for my house?

Spray foam insulation is sprayed in place in your Santa Maria attic, walls or crawl space, where it fills the gaps and forms the layer that slows heat moving in and out, so the house holds its temperature and uses less energy to stay comfortable.

Most calls start the same way. The bedroom upstairs is hot by afternoon, the floors stay cold all winter, or the house is old enough that nobody's sure what's up in the attic. The price turns on which foam you choose, how thick it goes on, how many square feet we're covering, how easy the space is to reach and whether old insulation has to come out first. The schedule turns on that same prep and on the day your household needs to be out while the foam sets. Sometimes the real trouble is leaks more than missing insulation, and plain air sealing does more than foam would. I come out, look at the space myself and write the estimate, so the number you get is for your house.

How we handle spray foam insulation

First I look at what's up there now, because foam sprayed over insulation that's damp or full of droppings just seals the problem in, so material like that comes out before anything else happens. The big choice is open cell or closed cell, and I walk you through what each one does well in the space you've got. If we're foaming under the roof to close the attic off from outside air, national guidance says that sealed attic still needs a way to get rid of moisture, so you'll know how yours will before we start. On spray day we plan with you for the whole household to be out, we cover what shouldn't get foam, and our crew sprays with me or a lead installer on site. Then we air the space out and clean up before you come back.

Foam isn't always the answer, and I'd rather say so now. It costs more than loose fill, and what that buys you is a coat that stops air leaks while it insulates. In a lot of houses, sealing the gaps around lights, pipes and the attic hatch and then topping up with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, does the job for less. When the ductwork runs through the attic, foam usually wins because it brings those ducts inside the sealed space. Our attic insulation page covers both routes if you want to compare them.

Spray foam insulation in Santa Maria houses

California's Energy Code sets efficiency requirements for changes to existing houses, not only for new homes and additions, so insulating an older Santa Maria house is work the state's rules reach. I go over what that means for your space when I'm out there, before you settle on a foam.

A lot of the houses we're called to around Santa Maria have ducts running through the attic, a room built over the garage, and insulation that's deep in the middle and thin at the edges where the roof comes down, which is backward, because the edges are where heat gets in. Foam fits those tight spots well, and when we leave an attic vented we keep the eave vents clear so it can still breathe. We see the same older houses and rooms over garages on jobs in Orcutt and Nipomo.

Why call us for spray foam

  • I write every estimate myself

I started this business in 2013 and still come out to look at the job and write the estimate. You talk to the person who knows exactly what the price covers, not a salesperson.

  • Licensed and fully insured, every job

We're licensed and fully insured. The state licensing board has a license type for anyone who installs insulation for heat or sound control, so ask any contractor you're weighing which license they hold.

  • We seal where nobody looks

Gaps around can lights, pipes and the attic hatch get sealed before the job's done, because insulation fighting a draft doesn't do much. Most of our Santa Maria calls are hot rooms, cold floors and older houses, and those leaks are usually behind them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Santa Maria?

In the Santa Barbara area, spray foam insulation usually costs about $1,800 to $4,600 to cover 1,000 square feet at 3 inches thick. Your own number moves with the foam type, the thickness and how hard the space is to reach, which is why I measure on site before I quote.

Should I get open-cell or closed-cell spray foam for my house?

Pick closed cell when heat control or moisture matters most, and open cell when you want a quieter room at a lower price. Closed-cell foam, the dense kind, is about twice as good per inch at slowing heat and can also block damp air, while open cell lets moisture pass. Open cell is the much better sound barrier and costs less.

How long after spray foam insulation can we go back in the house?

National guidance says to stay out until the foam has finished curing and the house has been aired out and cleaned. Some makers recommend 24 hours for professional systems, but it varies, so plan to stay somewhere else. We get the return time from the maker of the foam we use and give it to you before spray day.

How do I get help paying for insulation in Santa Maria?

Ask about the 3C-REN program, which lists insulating your home among its eligible upgrades and offers single-family incentives of $750 to $1,500 per project. The work has to be done by a contractor enrolled with the program and show savings on your gas or electric meter, so check enrollment before you sign.

Does spray foam insulation need to be covered?

Some spray foams do, with a fire-protective covering such as a coating or drywall, depending on the product and the code. I'll tell you whether the foam for your space needs one when I write the estimate, since it changes the price.

What is the best time of year to install spray foam insulation?

It depends on the product and the weather, and national guidance tells homeowners to get a clear answer on timing from both the contractor and the foam maker. We check the maker's instructions for the foam we'll use and pick a spray day with you that fits them.

  • Attic insulation

If your upstairs runs hot and the attic has only a few thin inches up there, this is often the first place to fix.

  • Blown-in insulation

A lower-cost way to add depth over an open attic floor once the leaks underneath are sealed.
