Is it time to add insulation to your attic?

Attic insulation in Santa Maria is the layer on the attic side of your ceiling that keeps heat from moving between the attic and the rooms below. Adding to it, after the gaps in that ceiling are sealed, is usually the fix when upstairs runs hot or the power bill keeps climbing.

Most people call us because the room over the garage is hot by afternoon, the floors feel cold in winter, or the house is older and nobody knows what's up there. The price comes down to how big the attic is, how many inches are already up there, whether old material has to come out first, how many gaps need sealing and how easy it is to move around up there. The schedule mostly turns on what I find, because anything that needs fixing in the attic gets done before we start, and the estimate I write after looking gives you your own price. We're based in Santa Maria and work across the cities around it in northern Santa Barbara County and southern San Luis Obispo County.

How we do attic insulation, start to finish

Before anything goes in, I go through the whole attic looking for roof leaks, old wiring, fans venting into the attic and whatever's stored up there. Those get sorted first, because new insulation laid over a leak or a bad wire just hides the problem. If the old material is soaked or full of droppings, it comes out through insulation removal so we aren't covering it over. Then our crew does the air sealing, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes, flues and the hatch, so the new layer isn't fighting a draft. We cover the ceiling evenly out to its edges, where a lot of jobs run thin, and set baffles, short channels that hold insulation back at the eaves, so the vents stay clear and the attic keeps breathing. You'll hear about spray foam, and it does seal air while it insulates, but it costs more. For most attics I'd seal the gaps and top up with loose fill instead, unless your ductwork runs through the attic, and then foam is worth talking through.

Most attic jobs are blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, because it settles into corners and around framing where batts leave gaps. If the attic is only part of the trouble, say cold floors over the crawl space along with a hot bedroom, I'd rather look at the whole house through home insulation than sell you a deeper attic that doesn't fix it.

Attic insulation in Santa Maria and the city's rules

In Santa Maria, the city's Building Division enforces the building codes California adopts, with the city's own amendments, so that's the office whose rules your attic work falls under. Whether an attic insulation job needs a permit isn't something I'll guess at, so before work starts we check with the building office that covers your address, whether that's the city or the county. If they say a permit is needed, we take care of the application and set up the inspections.

Around Santa Maria we see plenty of older houses with a few inches of settled fill, attics used as storage and rooms over garages that never got much insulation at all. We find the same things on jobs in Orcutt and Nipomo, and we handle them the same way, by sorting out what's there before anything new goes in.

Why call us for attic insulation

  • I look at every attic myself

I come out myself to look at the job and write the estimate, and our crew does the work with me or a lead installer on site. The person who crawled through your attic is the one answering for it.

  • In business since 2013

We've been at this since 2013, and most of what I know I learned crawling through attics and crawl spaces, not from a sales sheet. It shows in the parts of the attic nobody looks at once we leave.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured. That matters when a crew is walking the joists over your ceilings, and it's fair to ask any contractor the same before they go up.

  • Measured against current code

New insulation should meet or exceed the levels current building code calls for, and here that's the state code the city enforces. When I write your estimate, I look at what's already up there with that in mind, so you know where your attic stands.

We reply within one business day to set a time, and I come out myself to look through the attic and write your estimate on site. It's free, with no obligation to go ahead. If you can, tell us where the hatch is, what's stored up there and any roof leak, old wiring or vermiculite you've noticed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does attic insulation cost in Santa Maria?

Across the US, installing blown-in attic insulation usually costs about $4 to $7.50 per square foot, and that's a national market figure, not a Santa Maria quote or our price. Where your attic lands depends on the things I check when I'm up there, and the estimate I write afterward gives you your own number.

What has to be fixed before insulating an attic?

Anything new insulation would bury or make worse gets fixed first. Federal attic guidance lists a leaking roof, live knob and tube wiring, the early kind strung on porcelain knobs, vermiculite, attic flooring and bath fans ducted into the attic, along with unvented kerosene heaters or gas fireplaces in the house. That's why the check I described above comes before any material goes in, and why some jobs start with a roofer or an electrician.

What should I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?

Leave it alone and don't disturb it, because the EPA advises treating vermiculite, the pebbly gray-brown loose fill, as if it may contain asbestos. If you decide to have it taken out, the EPA says a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor should do it, and that company should be separate from whoever assessed it. If I find it, we stop and tell you before anything else happens up there.

Which license covers insulation work in California?

In California, insulation work falls under the state licensing board's C-2 Insulation and Acoustical Contractor classification, which covers installing any insulating material for temperature or sound control. When you're comparing bids for your attic, it's fair to ask each contractor what license they hold.

How long does attic insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?

Most families stay home while we blow in loose fill, because the work and the dust stay up in the attic and we cover the path to the hatch. How long we're up there depends on the attic's size, how much sealing it needs and whether anything has to be fixed or cleared first, and that's clearer once I've looked. Spray foam is different, since the foam maker sets a re-entry time, when people and pets can come back inside, and we follow it.

How much can attic insulation lower my power bill in Santa Maria?

An attic job is one piece of the savings a federal home insulation guide puts at up to 20% on heating and cooling. That figure is an average for insulating attics, floors, crawl spaces and accessible basement rim joists, the framing around the top edge of the foundation, plus sealing air leaks, so an attic alone gets you part of it. I'd rather tell you that plainly than promise a number on your bill.

  • Blown-in insulation

When your attic mostly needs more depth over a sealed ceiling, loose fill is usually the simplest way to get there without tearing anything out.

  • Home insulation

Worth a look when the trouble moves around the house, like cold floors downstairs and a hot room upstairs at the same time.
